Senior Product Manager - Publishing

Permanent employee, Full-time · London

Your mission

Salary range £80-95k - Hybrid role, central London 2 days per week

We’re looking for an experienced, inspiring Senior Product Manager to join our small but mighty Technology team at Wonderbly and help us take our product personalisation experiences to the next level.

Reporting to VP Product, this is a unique individual contributor role that sits at the very heart of our growth strategy — to create the world’s most successful and impactful publisher of books given as gifts. You’ll be working closely with many parts of the organisation to build new and innovative personalisation experiences. Your primary stakeholders will be from our Publishing Studio, a team of three production studios who create our unique personalised content for people of all ages.

This position would suit experienced, design-led product managers as there is a lot of unique UX and UI invention to do. Equally, you will be accountable for the overarching performance and conversion rates of what we call the “middle funnel”, the product personalisation journey, so you will need to be numerate and confident in measuring the impact of your work. Finally, you’ll require a flexible and disciplined approach to your product strategy and leadership in order to balance customer and commercial KPI-driving front-end experiences while continuing to develop our book production tooling.

To make the most of this role you will need to be passionate and excited about our mission, our category, and driving growth. We don’t have all the answers as to what needs to be built. We therefore want to find someone that can remain deeply curious over the long term about the best ways to bridge the physical and digital worlds (how can AI help?) and enable users to create the most memorable, most impactful books imaginable.

Beyond the intellectual and creative challenge of developing personalisation stack we offer a range of benefits that we believe make Wonderbly a great place to work:

  • Clear, Senior individual contributor role. This is an IC role. You will be responsible for setting and delivering a strategy, managing roadmaps, prioritising features and getting results … but not managing people. There will be opportunities for mentoring and coaching but your primary responsibility is to the product and its performance.

  • Sustainable business. We’ve been through our crazy hyper growth hyper intense VC teenage years. We now run the company as a sustainable, independent business that is not reliant on external capital. We believe this provides many advantages to our employees, chiefly a rational and manageable growth strategy linked to a rational and manageable, but ambitious workload.

  • Multidisciplinary company. Although we’re small (75 people at present) we’re extremely multidisciplinary. We have writers, illustrators, engineers, print on demand manufacturing specialists, marketeers and many other roles in one place. And we all have to work together to make the Wonderbly machine work. We think this is a great place for curious folks.

  • Flexible hybrid working. Because we believe in the value of multidisciplinary collaboration we have a simple hybrid policy. We ask colleagues to work from our beautiful London studio at least two days per week in order to build relationships and connect with folks beyond their immediate projects. We also offer an additional five weeks per year fully remote to enable folks to experiment with alternative ways of working.

  • Generous compensation and benefits. We don’t offer FAANG salaries. But we do pay well and reward strong performance. This role offers a base salary of between £80k and £95k dependent on experience and it will come with participation in our performance bonus scheme. We also offer 28 days holiday, private health insurance for you and your family, training and development budgets and many other practical perks.

We hope the mission, the work and the context we’ve outlined here excites you. If it does, we’d love to hear from you.

A little bit about you

Expected skills and experience

Below we’ve outlined some of the things we think a Senior Product Manager should be able to demonstrate to us in an interview.

  • Flexible and original thinker, capable of managing several projects at different degrees of resolution in parallel and able to communicate these initiatives clearly and succinctly at different levels of the organisation

  • Hands on approach to shipping - this is a strategic role but we need someone that also loves to roll their sleeves up. We expect you to be able to sketch wireframes, conduct core user research, write user stories, QA features at a high level and conduct analysis across your core applications

  • Hands on experience building original software - it’s vital you’ve worked directly with engineers, designers and analysts to build and ship software

  • Demonstrable experience collaborating with other specialists, ideally beyond the traditional realms of software engineering - for example manufacturing, product development, marketing, creative departments

  • Strong understanding of business dynamics at different lifecycle stages - this is more of a nice to have, but we’d love it if you’ve experienced working in a startup and a more mature organisation

  • Passion for the Wonderbly mission and category - you need to be personally very excited about contributing to our mission to increase the stock of human happiness and connection in the world by introducing our beautiful high quality personalised books to everyone with a bookshelf

About us
Oh hi! We’re delighted that you’re interested in working with Wonderbly, the UK Children’s Publisher of the Year 2021. Below you’ll find out all about us, our mission and values, and the roles we have open right now.

Wonderbly is the world’s leading personalised publishing company. We conceive, design, promote, sell, and make wonderful books for wonderful customers all over the world.

Our mission is to make people feel extraordinarily special, and bring them closer to the people they love, through the power of personalised stories. So far we’ve shipped over 8 million books to over 150 countries. We’ve done this in just eight years, and we’re just getting started.

Getting personalised books to all those millions of customers requires a multidisciplinary team. Our wonderful people have experience across editorial design, research, production, software engineering, marketing, e-commerce, data analysis, print-on-demand manufacturing, shipping… the list goes on.

This means that Wonderbly is a collaborative and creative place to work, with lots of opportunities for growth and development across a broad range of skills.

We’re based in London, where we have a gorgeous, light-filled studio for working together. But like many digital-first companies, we have a hybrid operating model, with many colleagues working from home and further afoot much of the time.

Our values

Wonderbly’s values were born from the three qualities at the heart of ‘Lost My Name’ - our original and best-selling personalised children’s book. These values are Courage, Curiosity and Kindness. And although they naturally have a child-friendly ring to them, these are deeply human values that we believe everyone should live by.

Courage means taking calculated risks and trying things that no one else would. It means setting audacious goals, seeing them through, and being willing to be wrong.

Curiosity means investing in learning, never losing sight of the ‘WHY’. Curiosity allows us to ask silly questions, explore our blind spots, and dip into other disciplines for inspiration.

Kindness is at the heart of our culture: it’s no coincidence that deep friendships form here every day. Kindness means making space for one another, inclusivity as standard, and clear, direct communication. It does not mean “good vibes only”: the kindest conversations are often the hardest.

Equal opportunities employer

Our team is committed to providing equal opportunities for employment regardless of race, religion or belief, ethnic origin, disability, family structure, socio-economic status, age, nationality or citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other basis (it's the law, but it's also just the right thing to do).

If you have a disability, caring duties, or any other additional needs that require consideration, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them during the application process.
